The Mansfield Lodge of the Sons & Daughters of Herman has been an integral part of Mansfield for over 55 years now.
It all began some 75 years ago by a few interested persons who were urged by the then Grand President of Ohio, William Boing, of Cleveland, to establish a Herman Lodge in the city of Mansfield. The men received their charter on November 14th, 1922 with Martin Vogel as their first president. The women followed soon after as they held their first meeting in November of 1923, with Teresa Schmidt as the first president. Signing of the charter took place on January 1st, 1924 with 21 members signing the charter. Thus, the humble beginnings of our lodges.
In these early years, the meetings were held in the members homes. Dues were mailed to the Grand Lodge. Gradually, the lodges began to grow and in the early 30's, combined meetings were held in the old Leiderkranz Hall at 4th and Main. Many good times were had in all of those years, as the newly organized lodges were supported by the Crestine and Bucyrus Lodges. Many dances, plays, traditional Kirchweis and parties were held to raise funds for the club. Usually the music for these events was provided by lodge members playing together.
